Dr. Ilona Niemi is a globally experienced Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) in financial services. Ilona served most recently as Group CCO at Co-operators, a leading Canadian financial services and insurance company. Prior to that, she was the CCO for Zurich Insurance in Canada and Global Head of Compliance Oversight and Reporting at Zurich Insurance Group in Switzerland. Ilona started her career in consulting and global public affairs in Europe and North America.
Ilona is a member of the advisory council for the Ted Rogers School of Management Law and Business Program, and advisory board and faculty for the Osgoode Hall Law School Regulatory Compliance Management Program. She acts as co-chair of the industry groups of WomenExecs on Boards. Ilona is author of the book, EU Council Presidency in an Enlarged European Union, and publications on compliance and ethics thought leadership. She is a frequent speaker at regulatory conferences.
Ilona holds a PhD and MA in International Relations from Ludwig-Maximilians University, as well as a Master in Policy Management from Georgetown University. She completed Harvard Business School’s Women on Boards and Columbia Business School’s Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Executive Programs. Ilona is a IAPP global fellow of information privacy and holds an ESG certificate from Competent Boards.
